Peebles High School’s ‘Astro-day’

Author: Thomas
Date: 1st July 2005

Bring an astronomer or two to school and pupils are captivated by the wonders of deep space. Add an astronaut and several other NASA staff into the mix and pupils are positively thrilled. Monday the 13th June was the setting for the visit by personnel from NASA and also those involved with the Faulkes Telescope. Jim Reilly was the astronaut who had spent many days in space, performed one of the first space walks, and was spending the afternoon visiting Peebles High School.

Jim Reilly meets our young engineers in Lab 3 at lunchtime

Alan Pickup and astronomy student Stuart were in the School before the NASA people, and were giving a presentation to the Engineering Club through the first part of lunchtime on things that you could find in the vastness of space. Alan is the person who writes the star charts for newspapers such as the Scotsman and the Guardian, while Stuart is currently studying for his PhD.

An astronaut, a software engineer, astronomers, teachers, students and more all in one place!

The NASA personnel were greeted by Lynda Cameron (who took part in a NASA boot camp the previous year) and after meeting everyone in the Engineering Club, they gave a fantastic and memorable presentation to a mainly 2nd year audience. Patricia and Tanya, a NASA education worker and software Engineer gave a most intriguing insight into what working at NASA was like and what preparations mission went through. Everyone gave their best and was thoroughly appreciated by all pupils that attended the presentation.

Then it was back to Lab 3 for a goodbye photo
