Heriot Watt 2005

Author: Thomas
Date: 3rd July 2005

We had two teams that we sent bravely into battle on Tuesday 14th June to Heriot Watt University. Their brilliantly devised and flawlessly executed robot challenge was in its fourth year of running and this saw some changes to the tasks set out before the challengers. Nothing the ever so resourceful PHS pupils couldn’t cope with though. They were ready and eager to get stuck into the challenge since the moment they arrived. The main challenge this year was a game of robot football that didn’t really resemble football at all.

The pitches were separated by centre beams with two goals cut out of them. On each side was five table tennis balls, and the aim of the challenge this year was to get as many of your balls onto your opponents side as possible. Similar to past years, our teams developed supreme robots that were excellent at capturing the table tennis ball and releasing them through to the other side. Their fantastic robots and matching driving skills allowed both teams to soar through the heat and semi final rounds, until they inevitably met in the final.

The two PHS robots met for the light hearted, yet tense final of the competition

It was a Peebles against Peebles match, and since we as a school had won, the match was fairly relaxed, compared to previous years anyway. Team two was triumphant overall, getting the winning ball through with mere seconds to spare. Team one received the prize for the best designed robot however, so we were all thrilled with the outcome. We received a controller mechanism for the robots as well, meaning we could be seeing some more amazingly fun robot matches in Lab 3 sometime in the near future.
