Young Engineers Club of the Year Awards 2005

Author: Thomas
Date: 10th July 2005

A team of Four from our Club were present to showcase our best and brightest projects, the foremost of these being the drill robot that scored success in Birmingham.

After a lenghtly delay at Edinburgh airport we managed to arrive at the Old Navy College just as everyone else was leaving for their dorms. This meant that we had missed the introductory talk, the preparation of our stall, and dinner. We went out onto the streets of London to rectify the latter of these issues, and our stall was easily set up in the morning. Throughout the day we were explaining our various projects to whoever came by. All of this was good pratice for when the judges visited. Thinking we did ok, we relaxed a bit; the results would be read out later that evening.

After going back to the dorms and getting changed into formal dress we attended our stall once more, this time for the guests of the event who wandered around the various showcases. The guest of honor, Richard Hammond (TV presenter of Top Gear and Brainic) came around just before the very fancy meal began. This was in the painted hall, an enourmous room as tall as it was wide with a spectacular giant painting on the walls and ceiling. Richard Hammond gave everyone a talk about the event and about the importance of Young Engineers for the future of Britain and the World.

After that, the prizegiving ceremony kicked off with prizes being given out for projects and clubs. And here's where the good news is... We won a lovely prize! Not the main one but one with a fabulous title none the less. We won the teamwork award with a trophy, £500 and much prestige amoung our peers. It was a golden moment for this club and everything we have worked on.

The entire trip was a fabulous experiance. The next day we had many hours before our flight so we went a wander to some of London's tourist attractions. We got back after dusk and returned to normality the day after. The team of four did a superb job at representing the club and indeed Scotland in London and many a fond memory has been gained from it.
